Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Born in 100 BC, Caesar became dictator for life in 44 BC but was assassinated shortly thereafter due to fears of his growing power and the threat to the Republic.
